What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your brand, content, and website so that AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overviews — choose to cite you as a source when they answer a question.

Why AEO exists now

For two decades, "being found" meant ranking on a search-engine results page and hoping someone clicked. That model is breaking. Google itself reports that a large and growing share of searches end without a click — the answer is served directly in an AI Overview or a featured snippet. When the user never reaches a list of blue links, classic SEO's unit of value (a #1 ranking) stops translating into traffic.

At the same time, a new generation of "answer engines" has trained hundreds of millions of users to ask instead of search: "Which project management tool should a remote startup use?" The product that gets named in that answer wins the customer — whether or not it ever ranked on page one of Google.

AEO vs. "just good content"

Writing helpful content is necessary but not sufficient. AEO is the discipline of making that content machine-citable:

The foundation comes first

You cannot earn citations on a site AI engines can't read. Before any content play, run a Full Site Audit: verify the homepage is crawlable and indexable, that structured data is valid, and that Core Web Vitals and semantic HTML are in place. AEO sits on top of solid technical SEO — it does not replace it.
